education
and engagement
In addition to regular performances across the United States, Pure Winds has worked to create a number of educational outreach programs to serve a diverse array of audiences. You'll find information about some of these programs below. If you'd like to learn more about our outreach work, or if you have an idea for creating a new program with us, please visit our contact page.
SOUND SAFARI
Our Sound Safari program is designed to introduce younger audiences (ages 0-6) to six characteristics of music by incorporating animal costumes along with a variety of woodwind quintet repertoire.
MASTERCLASSES
Pure Winds gives both chamber ensemble masterclasses and instrument-specific clinics, each with plenty of time for us to answer any questions the students may have. These programs teach students our own rehearsal-performance process and give constructive advice on how to become more effective members of their own chamber ensembles.
PETER AND THE WOLF
This program features a performance of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, complete with fun costumes and audience participation. It is best suited for elementary school audiences.
CHILDREN'S CONCERTS
Pure Winds has a variety of concert programs geared toward our younger audience members. Each program is fast-paced and filled with interactive and exciting repertoire for children of all ages.
LEGEND OF MICHIGAN
The Legend of Michigan program culminates in a staged reading of Trinka Hakes Noble's The Legend of Michigan. The performance includes elementary-age students performing alongside Pure Winds on both standard repertoire and student-composed music.
INSTRUMENT PETTING ZOOS
Pure Winds has organized several instrument petting zoos for children of all ages. Participants have the chance to get up close to a variety of wind instruments and can even try playing a few notes on each if they'd like!
